MANAGING REJECTION

Being rejected for a job is disappointing and can take an emotional toll on your motivation and confidence. How can you best manage rejection throughout your search?

Firstly, understand that the job market has changed. Post COVID, we were in a very scarce talent market and employers were willing to hire candidates who were a 60% match for roles. A few years on, the talent market is more competitive and employers are looking to hire candidates who are a 90% or higher fit for the role. With this in mind, be sure you are applying for roles that are a true fit for your skillset.

Focus on mindset: view each interview process as a training opportunity. Ask for feedback from the hiring manager and focus on what role skills or interview skills you can improve. If you can use rejection as a learning experience, you’re another step closer to securing that dream role. If you aren’t receiving tangible feedback, consider working with a mentor to understand your gaps.

Develop emotional resilience and lean on those around you. Rejection is an important part of personal growth. Talk to the people closest to you for support and keep in mind that a no now, isn’t a no forever. Be graceful in receiving the feedback and talk it over with your personal network to build your resilience.

Finally, if the rejection is repetitive and becomes a burden on your mental load, consider taking a break from the search and come back with a fresh mindset in a few weeks or months.
