MEET OUR NEW INTERN: KATE DEVILEE

Our newest angel has grown her wings. We’re so pleased to introduce you to Kate Devilee, our Melbourne based intern who is officially one month in to her new role with us. Join us in conversation with Kate, as we chat all things internship, HR goals and her Store Management career to date.

Meet Kate.

First things first, how did you land your new Relier gig and why did you apply?

I actually found Relier through TikTok! I was just scrolling when I came across a video of Lauren sharing her career journey, and it really resonated with me. Her story felt so aligned with who I am, where I am now, and where I want to go in the future. I felt inspired, so I got on the Relier website and reached out, explaining my situation and asking about any internship opportunities. I got the opportunity to chat with Emily over a call, where we discussed everything about Relier and my career aspirations. The conversation was incredibly inspiring and really boosted my excitement for the potential of joining the team. About a month later, the internship position opened up, and I knew I had to apply. It all felt like perfect timing, especially since I was already planning to step down from my management role. I couldn’t believe it when I found out that I’d landed the internship—it felt like it was all meant to be!

You’ve had an impressive store leadership roles for some inspiring AU Designer names. Tell us about some of the biggest learnings you’ve had from your time as a Store Manager.

During my time as a Store Manager, some of my biggest learnings were centered around people management. Leading a team taught me the importance of clear communication and setting measurable goals to motivate and guide the team. I learned how critical it is to create an environment where team members feel valued, which directly impacts their performance and the overall customer experience.

What inspired you to start your fashion career in retail?

My passion for fashion and the dynamic nature of retail inspired me to start my career in this industry. I was drawn to the opportunity to connect with customers, understand their needs, and create memorable shopping experiences. The fast-paced environment, the need to constantly adapt to trends, and the ability to work with beautiful, inspiring products have always kept me motivated and engaged. Retail felt like the perfect blend of creativity and strategy, and I knew early on that I wanted to be part of it.

What led you to consider an internship and how did you know it was time for a shift from the shop-floor life?

I decided to explore an internship in fashion recruitment because I wanted to step beyond the sales floor and get a closer look at the people side of the industry, like HR and talent acquisition. This role felt like the perfect way to blend my retail experience with what I’m studying in HR and Psychology, giving me the chance to put my skills into action. I knew it was time for a change when I found myself craving new challenges and wanting to contribute to the fashion world from a different angle.

What does a typical day in the office look like for you in your new role at Relier?

My day usually kicks off around 9 or 9:30 am when I log into the Relier careers email to sort through and respond to messages. After that, I often jump on a call with Emily, who fills me in on any projects I’ll be tackling that day. Right now, I’m working on an ongoing project and also getting hands-on with recruitment tasks, like drafting contracts. The focus of my internship is all about learning, so I’m also working through a few training modules as I go. Every day brings something new, I’m always busy, and I absolutely love it!

It’s only been a few weeks, but how do you see this internship impacting your long term career goals?

Getting hands-on experience in HR and recruitment is bringing my university studies to life. I’m learning skills that I know will be invaluable as I move forward, and it’s also helped me refine my vision of where I want my career to go—combining my retail experience with people-focused roles in HR. This experience is setting a strong foundation for my future, and I feel more confident about the path I’m on.

What are your words of wisdom for those out there considering whether or not an internship can add value to their resume and career?

My advice would be to go for it. An internship is a great way to gain hands-on experience, learn new skills, and see the inner workings of a business from a different perspective. It’s an opportunity to explore new career paths without making a permanent shift. Internships can open doors, expand your network, and add valuable experience to your resume that sets you apart in the job market. Even if it feels like a step down from a paid position, the learning and growth can be worth far more in the long run.

And last but not least, we do work in fashion, darling, so what’s the next purchase on your wardrobe Wishlist?

I have been saving to get the Organically Shaped Stacking Rings in gold and silver from Pandora! I buy soooo many clothes and now I’m in desperate need of some accessories. These pieces are new at Pandora and definitely very different from their usual style. Very cool girl, mixed metal aesthetic.
