Casual pick-packing - is it really all that?

Hi Relier Angels,

Jess here with the 411 on casual dispatch roles. Are they really all that? In short… yes. These roles are hot property at the moment, given the increase in online sales eComm is experiencing. Shout out to the pandemic we all know and don’t love

What’s so good about them, Jessy girl? I hear your whispers and in one short sentence, I shall answer. Picking and packing is yo’ ultimate foot-in-the-door to your dream role, with your dream brand.

Where can this role really lead you?

Picking & packing roles are fast paced, high volume and oh so fulfilling (get it?). Generally speaking, if you’ve got experience in a retail setting, the ability to work under pressure,  good time management skills and a problem-solvers attitude, you’re a great fit.

Working as a Dispatch Assistant can expose you to some major cool promotion opportunities across a handful of departments. Namely, we love this role for any Relier chickens looking to move into ECOMM, CUSTOMER SERVICE, MARKETING & WHOLESALE.

Here’s how …

ECOMMERCE -

The digi world baby - it’s thriving and the at forefront of most business at the mo’.

As a pick-packer, you’ll generally report into the eCommerce team and be exposed to their leadership in a very real way. If eComm is your dream - take this role seriously. You’ll spend your days picking and packing,  but more importantly, you’ll be getting to know the ins-and-outs of fulfilment like printing labels, marking orders as fulfilled, troubleshooting quality control and more. Say hello to Shopify and other eComm tech exposure. Surely i't’s a yes from you!

Pick-packing really is the best entry level role to explore eComm. You get direct exposure to the senior team and we have seen many a pick-packers move into eComm support roles thanks to their funky tech skills and ability to perform under pressure.

CUSTOMER SERVICE -

If you’re a people’s person (like myself) you can probably picture yourself thriving in an online customer service role.

You really are offering a service in pick-packing. Many of our gorg clients take a very personalised approach to order fulfilment. Think handwritten love notes, personalised packaging and more. Naturally, you’ve giving great service by getting orders packed quickly and writing those little notes to brand-fans far and wide. This role is heavily intertwined with Customer Care managers and is generally exposed to problem-resolution every day. You’re building skills to work towards that ultimate service role each and every day. Be sure to put your hand up to assist with customer enquiries through ZenDesk and more during peak period - the key to a promotion is always to ask for more. The more you get noticed in your dispatch role, the more likely you are to score a promotion into a Customer Service position.

MARKETING -

Yes! We said marketing! We made your heart flutter - it’s the department of the moment and we all know it’s true. As a pick-packer, you are of the digital world. It is common-place in a support office for pick-packers to be a part of the wider marketing team. In most offices, Head of Digital oversees marketing and eComm functions. And so you really are exposing yourself to marketing in a small way of your own.

We say make yourself known to the marketing team. Offer to volunteer on shoots, show a keen interest in their day-to-day roles and make it known that when as assistant level comes up in their world, you’ll be applying. We just saw a gorgeous pick-packer get promoted into the role of Content Creator with a client, so you better believe us when we say this will get you in, sis!

WHOLESALE -

Depending on the size of the brand you’re working for, as a pick-packer, you’ll cross over to assist in wholesale order fulfilment as well as online orders. Of course, this is not the case for all brands, but we have seen this frequently and, again, it’s the perfect opportunity to make yourself known to the leaders in your dream department. Similarly to the Marketing tips we gave, make yourself known, ask for extra workload in that department and be sure to shout your wholesale passions from the rooftop. This is a natural and easy cross over when Wholesale Admin support opportunities arise.

All in all, dispatch is a haven of eComm hustle and bustle and is at the core of your favourite online retail experiences. It is all that. We believe it’s your essential move to get into higher level eComm, Wholesale, Marketing and Customer Service roles.

However we will say this: retail shop floor opportunities are equally as important, and the same applies for these bad boys. Ya Relier gals both started here and look at us FLY!

Hope to see your cute little hands packing orders for your favourite brands soon.

Lots of Love,

Jess x
