The art of the cover letter is one that has not been mastered by many. When applying for a new role, it’s important that your cover letter has just as much impact as your resume. Many job ads will still request a cover letter, however even when they don’t, we suggest following the same rules in the body of an email when submitting a new role application.

Your cover letter should be concise. It should be no longer than one page and formatted in a way that can easily be skimmed and scanned by the reader. Use short paragraphs, the bold tool and dot points to your advantage to keep your cover letter clear and easy to read.

It should reference the job ad and contain new information that your resume doesn’t. Use the bold tool to highlight the skills you bring that align with the requirements of the role.

And finally, ‘to whom it may concern’ doesn’t cut it in our digital world. It’s easy to find the person who has posted the ad and you should personalise who you address whenever possible. Either reference the specific ad poster or be specific in address the Talent Acquisition or Careers team at a minimum.
