CAREER GUIDE: IS IT TIME TO QUIT YOUR JOB?
Welcome to our Career Guide Series. A selection of sharp and shiny guides that will help you achieve success in your next career step.
Are you lacking motivation in your current job? Perhaps you’re inching closer and closer to that dreaded glass ceiling. Whether you realise it or not, now might be time to close this chapter of your career journey and move on to the next.
If you find yourself ticking more than a few boxes on the signs below, then perhaps it’s time for you to leave your current role.
IS IT THE CULTURE?
You feel sick to your stomach every time Sunday evening rolls around. If this is you then you’ve got a serious case of the Sunday scaries. Every workplace has its moments, but if you’re dreading Monday week after week with no light at the end of the tunnel, it might be time to say goodbye.
The company values no longer align with your values - whether it be the treatment of staff or environmental issues, it may be time to look elsewhere.
You aren’t experiencing proper work-life balance. If your job is negatively affecting your personal life, overworking you, or causing health issues, it might be time to explore jobs that allow you to put your well-being first. Know that overtime happens in many roles - what’s important here is how you feel about those additional hours.
You are tired all the time. You could be experiencing a serious case of burnout. Prolonged periods of stress and exhaustion caused by your current role are a clear sign it’s time for a change.

IS IT THE GROWTH?
Does your current job align with your long-term career goals? It may have been the foot in the door that you once needed, but it’s important to make progress in a role that is meaningful to you and your career path
You’ve hit the glass ceiling. You have spent 3-4 years in a role with no progression or are constantly being overlooked for a promotion by external hires.
You have been approached by a recruiter or an industry network who has offered you an opportunity that you can’t stop thinking about, which could lead to more fulfilling work.
You are not learning from your leaders.
You have trained your team to function seamlessly without you there. Perhaps it’s time for a new challenge.
You are inspired or excited by the thought of change or are eager to learn new skills
IS IT THE MONEY?
You are fearing financial instability. If your company is experiencing financial difficulties that could result in downsizing or pay-cutting you should consider exploring other options.
Your salary isn’t growing to reflect your experience or additional responsibilities.
You aren’t being recognised or compensated fairly for your results. If you consistently go unnoticed for your contributions or feel as though your pay doesn’t align with your performance or the industry standards, it might be time to look elsewhere.
You haven’t had a payrise in over two years and there’s no sign of one on the horizon.
Timing is everything when it comes to choosing when to leave, and although the signs may be clear, it is important to weigh up all of your options before making any rash decisions.
